Back in 1998, I was involved in the change of use of the former Sorting Office in Birmingham into a mixed use commercial development comprising of offices, shops, restaurants, hotels and living accommodation. It was the first time that such a development had happened in Birmingham and saw us chopping the centre out of the building to create an open air atrium. It is recently undergoing a face lift with the public spaces being updated for 2015. From an engineering point of view this was a challenge back in 1998 with the Client spending around £55M over a 14 month period to rebuild the space.
