Expanding into the Barn

An extended family requires additional space for future use.

A former farmhouse in Lazonby near Penrith was the idilic setting for Mark Ives-Armitage and his family but quickly they realised that when their extended family visited, they needed additional space.

An adjacent barn connected to the house was the ideal space, and with the assistance of architect, Michael Stanford, an outline proposal for the barn conversion undertaken.  The site, located near the local school and swimming pool is within the centre of the village, with a small stream running along the adjacent road.  The stream, at peak, flowed into the adjacent River Eden, which during flooding, lapped at the doors of the barn.

Kingmoor Consulting were appointed to review the flood data and provide advise and support to engineer suitable solutions to the flood resilience.  In addition, a full structural inspection of the barn was conducted to support the planning application ensuring that the barn was fit for redevelopment with limited structural work required to the barn’s appearance.
